  • Exteriors by Aspen

Your boutique exterior remodeling company By Jillian Chandler Carter Coleman has always been drawn to architectural design and construction. Starting in 2001 as a hands-on whole-house remodeler, he eventually moved on to specializing in custom home building in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. In 2008, due to the market crash, Carter found himself having to rework his business, and in 2012 he took a job with James Hardie — the largest fiber cement siding manufacturing company in the US — which would take him, wife Ashleigh, and two young sons from the heat of Texas to the heart of the Inland Northwest. With James Hardie, Carter worked as a regional installation, technical sales and sales representative for six years, during which time he trained architects, builders and installation crews on how to properly install their siding products. With his territory covering Western Montana to the Casca des, extending up into Canada and down into Denver, the travel was taking a toll on him and his family. After learning the technical side and invaluable knowledge from the James Hardie organization — by attending and leading installation workshops from coast to coast — Carter realized there were a lot of “gaps” in the market and areas that could be capitalized upon to deliver a better overall experience for homeowners. In 2015, Carter and Ashleigh decided to relaunch their Texas building company, this time specializing in exteriors, and opened Exteriors by Aspen. Carter transferred over not only his business name of Aspen into Exteriors by Aspen but also his building ethics of overseeing each project from start to finish with the homeowner. “Before embarking on any project, there’s the initial site visit,” Carter explains, “which can be as short as 20 minutes to as long as the client needs to feel comfortable, allowing them the opportunity to ask as many questions as needed — and get those questions answered.” Carter personally takes phone calls, as well as measures each home with state-of-the art 3D imaging software. This advanced tool allows homeowners to really get a feel for how the house will look when finished. Through this software, Carter has the ability to completely change the façade, as it allows the client to change the look of the entire home with a few clicks of the mouse. Carter’s “Good, Better, Best” bid system is custom tailored to each unique home and is highly detailed, outlining the scope of the project clearly and succinctly for three distinct price points; far from an ambiguous text message or a set of impersonal boxes on a production checklist that have been the norm around here for too long. Serving Spokane and North Idaho, Exteriors by Aspen offers an array of siding products, including: fiber cement siding (James Hardie ColorPlus), all vinyl products, windows and doors, composite and wood decking, natural and cultured stone and stucco, all types of roofing, and installation of rigid foam insulation or blow-in cellulose. Aspen’s true specialization is in James Hardie pre-painted ColorPlus fiber cement. “We proudly offer the best products because it’s what homeowners desire to revitalize their most important investment,” Carter affirms. With more than 700 curated James Hardie Colors to choose from, Carter ensures that all accessories including trim, shingles, board and batten, soffits, touch-up paint and caulking are color-matched for fade resistance, as well as performance and durability. “If the ColorPlus doesn’t align with your budget or unique situation, I’ll be the first to tell you why and what we can do differently. Also, we don’t treat your home as ‘builder grade,’ because you don’t see it that way. Homeowners desire low-maintenance products that deliver performance and durability that can not only stand up to our harsh climatic variables but also the test of time. Other siding companies deliver what’s easiest and fastest for them to install … not what’s best for the homeowner.” Knowledge of the industry and his relationships with suppliers, manufacturers and manufacturer reps in the region is what truly sets Carter apart from the competition. Combined with his unparalleled knowledge of James Hardie siding manufacturing and installation, his clients can expect nothing less than superior quality and excellent service. Carter is proud of the business he has built alongside Ashleigh, adding, “I really like seeing the old become new again and seeing the owner’s satisfaction during and after the projects. When we’re done with the house, you’re done with the house — no need to wait on painters or anyone else. We take care of everything; from new exhaust vents to house address numbers, right down to installing a new doorbell!” The Colemans are an active family that enjoys all Idaho has to offer through snowboarding, fishing, dirt-biking and camping. In addition to spending time with their two sons, Baker (18) and Bear (15), they are also a licensed foster family, and have been fostering a little boy since birth, for almost two years. They also sponsor several children through the program Food for the Hungry (FH.org). Exteriors by Aspen 208.620.9041 Install@exteriorsbyaspen.com ExteriorsbyAspen.com Facebook.com/exteriorsbyaspen

  • Discover the Power of Natural Techniques for Hormonal Balance

Nurturing wellness for men and women By Drew Johnson Hormones are the chemical messengers that orchestrate numerous physiological processes in our bodies, influencing everything from mood and metabolism to reproduction and growth. Achieving hormonal balance is crucial for overall health and well-being, yet many individuals struggle with hormonal imbalances at various stages of life. While conventional medical treatments exist, a growing number of people are turning to holistic approaches to restore equilibrium to their hormonal systems. It’s time to explore holistic methods for balancing hormones in both men and women. Understanding Hormonal Imbalance Hormonal imbalance occurs when there's either too much or too little of a particular hormone circulating in the body. This imbalance can lead to a wide range of symptoms, including fatigue, weight gain or loss, mood swings, irregular menstruation, decreased libido, and more. Factors such as stress, poor nutrition, lack of exercise, environmental toxins and aging can all contribute to hormonal disruptions. Holistic Approaches for Hormonal BalanceDiet and Nutrition: A cornerstone of holistic hormone balance is adopting a diet rich in whole, nutrient-dense foods. Focus on consuming plenty of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, healthy fats and complex carbohydrates. Consider making modifications to your diet to incorporate foods that support hormone production and metabolism, such as cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, kale), fatty fish (salmon, mackerel), nuts and seeds, fiber (fortified cereals, oats, chia seeds) and foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids (flaxseeds, chia seeds). Stress Management: Chronic stress can disrupt hormone levels, particularly cortisol, the body's primary stress hormone. Practicing stress-reduction techniques such as meditation, yoga, deep breathing exercises, and spending time in nature can help lower cortisol levels and promote hormonal balance. Regular Exercise: Physical activity is essential for maintaining healthy hormone levels. Aim for a combination of cardiovascular exercise, strength training and flexibility exercises to support overall well-being. Exercise helps regulate insulin levels, reduce inflammation and promote the release of endorphins, which can positively impact hormone balance. Adequate Sleep: Sleep plays a vital role in hormone regulation, with disruptions in sleep patterns often leading to hormonal imbalances. For proper sleep hygiene, aim for seven to nine hours of quality sleep per night to support hormone production, repair and rejuvenation. Establish a regular sleep schedule, create a relaxing bedtime routine and optimize your sleep environment for restful slumber. Herbal Remedies and Supplements: Certain herbs and supplements have been used for centuries to promote hormonal balance. Examples include:• Adaptogens: Herbs like ashwagandha, rhodiola and holy basil help the body adapt to stress and support overall hormonal health.• Vitex: Also known as chasteberry, vitex is commonly used to regulate menstrual cycles and alleviate symptoms of PMS.• Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Supplements containing omega-3 fatty acids can help reduce inflammation and support hormonal balance.• Magnesium: This essential mineral plays a crucial role in hormone production and may help alleviate symptoms of PMS and menopause. Hormone Testing and Monitoring: For those experiencing persistent symptoms of hormonal imbalance, hormone testing can provide valuable insights into specific hormone levels and imbalances. This information allows individuals to tailor their holistic approach to address their unique hormonal needs effectively. Balancing hormones is essential for optimal health and well-being, and holistic approaches offer a natural and effective way to achieve hormonal equilibrium. By addressing factors such as diet, stress, exercise, sleep and supplementation, individuals can support their body's innate ability to balance hormones naturally and promote overall wellness. Alleviate More than Stress with Massage Therapy Massage therapy offers more than just relaxation — it can also play a role in balancing hormones. Through various techniques, massage stimulates the body's parasympathetic nervous system, reducing cortisol levels and promoting the release of feel-good hormones like serotonin and dopamine. This can help alleviate stress and anxiety, which are common contributors to hormonal imbalances. Additionally, massage may directly target specific hormone-regulating glands, such as the pituitary gland, promoting better hormone production and regulation throughout the body. Hormone Harmony: The Benefits of Jogging Jogging isn't just about cardio; it's a powerful tool for hormonal balance. Regular jogging sessions help regulate insulin levels, decrease cortisol and trigger the release of endorphins, promoting a sense of well-being. This holistic approach supports overall hormonal health, addressing symptoms associated with imbalances such as mood swings, fatigue and weight fluctuations. So, lace up those sneakers and hit the pavement for a hormone-boosting workout! Holistic Healing for Hormonal Balance Holistic practitioners offer personalized approaches to address hormonal imbalances through diet, lifestyle modifications, herbal remedies, and stress management techniques, fostering natural harmony within the body's intricate hormonal systems.

  • Hoopfest 2024

The best basketball weekend on Earth By Christian Weaner Spokane's streets are set to throb with the rhythmic bounce of basketballs and the roar of enthusiastic crowds as Hoopfest, the world's largest 3-on-3 basketball tournament, returns for its annual spectacle. As anticipation mounts for another thrilling year, here is what Hoopfest 2024 has in store for participants and spectators alike. New Thrills and Competitions One of the exciting additions this year is the introduction of the bump (knockout) competition, offering games for all ages. Riley Stockton, Hoopfest's executive director, believes this addition will be a hit. "I think bump in basketball translates better than even the games do,” Riley states. “Everyone knows bump, and everyone can play it, so that should be a fun activity." Adding to the excitement, the Festival of Hoops raffle will provide basketball enthusiasts with unique experiences, including coveted tickets to a major Gonzaga basketball game. Hoopfest organizers are also working on securing appearances by a few celebrities, enhancing the festival atmosphere and adding to the overall excitement. Hoopfest Highlights An event not to be missed is the MultiCare Slam Dunk Competition. "One of the best events we do is the MultiCare Slam Dunk Competition." Riley acknowledges his bias, but he argued that the Hoopfest dunk contest is even better than the annual NBA dunk competition. “We have some really highflyers that come from around the Northwest,” Riley adds. “And they put on a show the last couple of years that rivaled any dunk contest I’ve ever seen.” Tips for First-Time Attendees Riley recommends that first-time Hoopfest fans explore games from different age groups and competition levels to fully experience the diverse range of talent and excitement the tournament offers. Hoopfest's Impact on Spokane Beyond the basketball, Hoopfest is a celebration of community spirit, bringing out the best in Spokane's residents. "Hoopfest brings out the best in the people of Spokane," Riley describes. "We have tried to do Hoopfest in other cities ... but you can't meet the magic of Spokane." With fans, players and volunteers coming together, Hoopfest has become a cherished tradition in the city. Stockton’s Hoopfest Legacy For Riley Stockton, Hoopfest is more than just a basketball tournament — it's a family tradition and a lifelong passion. Growing up in Spokane, Riley was immersed in a basketball-rich environment, with his uncle, the legendary John Stockton, leaving an indelible mark on the local basketball scene. Riley's roots in Hoopfest run deep, having played in the tournament since kindergarten, often alongside his brothers and cousins, creating lasting memories on the streets of Spokane. "It is a privilege and an honor," Riley says of his role as executive director, which he has held for three years now. "There were so many good memories that came from this organization when I was young and growing up, so to be in charge of that and being the one to hopefully provide those good memories and those good times for other Spokane families and out-of-town families is a privilege and an honor." Despite his busy schedule overseeing the event, Riley's love for Hoopfest remains unwavering. "The two best weekends of the year have always been Hoopfest and Christmas," he remarks. Get Ready for Hoopfest 2024 As the countdown to Hoopfest 2024 begins, excitement is palpable for what promises to be another unforgettable weekend of basketball again this year. Whether you're a seasoned player, an avid fan or a first-time attendee, Hoopfest 2024 guarantees an experience like no other.
