- One-of-a-Kind Dining Experience in Century-Old Inn
The Greenbriar Inn opened its doors back in 1985 in a beautiful historic 1908 building just a few blocks from Downtown Coeur d’Alene. For more than three decades, owners Bob and Kris McIlvenna have welcomed their guests into their warm and inviting inn offering seven suites, each with its own distinct look mixed with antique and replica furnishings. There are many antiques mixed with more modern comforts, providing guests a cozy and eclectic atmosphere. “We have strived to remain as true to its original structure as possible, with a nod to modern conveniences,” says Kris. What started as a bed and breakfast added catering to the mix in 1986. Greenbriar Catering is the largest independent caterer in North Idaho, also catering to Eastern Washington, and has won many awards over the years. Greenbriar has gone through three major remodels, the most recent being the 315 Restaurant, which Bob and Kris opened in 2008 with a martini and tapas bar. Today, the 110-year-old inn greets you with its simplicity and elegance the moment you walk through the door. Take a seat at the stylish bar and order from the modestly priced wine list or dine at a table near one of the two fireplaces. To add to the ambiance, live soft music plays every Tuesday, Friday and Saturday evening. The restaurant sits on the main floor, featuring a flavorful and diverse menu of starters, tapas and entrées. In addition, you can choose from a selection of handcrafted martinis and cocktails, beer and wine, and nonalcoholic beverages and cocktails. During the colder season, you will find more small-plate options than ever at prices as low as $3 per plate. And when it comes to their handcrafted cocktail selection, they offer specials weekly, and you can be assured that their award-winning bar and bartenders will be doing something special. During the months of November and March, they will be hosting special wine dinners you won't want to miss. If you are looking for someone to cater your special event on site or off, The Greenbriar has you covered. They can cater up to 70 people indoors at their location (up to 150 during the summer months) or off site for parties up to 1,000! Choose from an extensive appetizer and dinner menu that includes many nationalities as well as barbecue. "We have a special nonprofit pricing package," says Kris. "We also offer wedding events a special package on rooms at The Greenbriar, as well as special pricing for the wedding or the reception if we're doing a rehearsal dinner or vice versa." Call for an appointment or a phone consultation at 208.667.9660 ext.1. Ask for Kris or Danielle. With its garden setting in the middle of downtown, whether you're a local or visitor to the area, this is a unique place to gather with friends or family, as it is a 1908 Nationally Registered property with lots of charm, a great bar and restaurant. Looking for dinner and a romantic overnight stay? - Syringa Japanese Café & Sushi Bar and The Bluebird
Husband and wife team Viljo and Autumn Basso knew they wanted to open another restaurant “to create and do something different,” and when it came to location, there was no question that midtown continues to be the place for them. Home to their first restaurant, Syringa Japanese Café and Sushi Bar, a local favorite for its fresh fish and flavors, the couple has always been attracted to the area. As Autumn says, “We love the neighborhood with its fun eclectic shops and various thrift stores all around us, plus the neighboring local restaurants like Capone’s and Angelo’s, it seemed like a perfect fit.” The Bluebird, a midtown eatery, opened its doors in May of 2016 and quickly gained a large following that continues to grow. Viljo and Autumn have delivered a casual neighborhood bistro-style restaurant offering a cozy rustic interior, with reclaimed warm rustic wood and metal, and vintage pictures adorning the walls. It can seat 42 patrons and an additional 10 at the bar. During the summer months, diners can enjoy a meal or drink on the outdoor patio, which seats more than a dozen. When it comes to what makes both Syringa and The Bluebird distinct, Viljo says, “At each place, we’ve had the ability to create, in our small place, a friendly local neighborhood vibe. The food is unique, the customers are unique and the employees are unique.” At Syringa, patrons will find modern Japanese cuisine on the menu, whereas The Bluebird is an eclectic Northwest bistro—the menu inspired by the couple’s 20 years of culinary travels and adventures. Seasonal as much as possible, the menu items change frequently with specials offered weekly, allowing diners to try something new each time they visit. The big hit thus far has been the wild parmesan-crusted halibut with ratatouille. To accompany the deliciously unique menu, Krista French, The Bluebird’s sommelier, has put together an outstanding wine list with amazing selections from all over the world. Combined with the talents of Jamie McIntosh, the beer program manager, who has compiled and continues to bring in a great selection of beers, ciders and sours, guests can’t go wrong with their selection. The Bluebird has found its home. And the neighborhood has welcomed it with open arms. “Our goal was to open the kind of restaurant we like to dine at and bring more dining variety to Coeur d’Alene,” says Autumn. And guests are eating it up. Whether you take a seat at Syringa or The Bluebird, Viljo, Autumn and their staff are ready to serve you and help create a memorable—and delicious—dining experience. - A Family Affair
Established in 1982 by husband and wife Mike and Ellena Conway, Latah Creek Wine Cellars in Spokane Valley continues to bring affordable, award-winning wines to the Inland Northwest. Thirty-seven harvests and 36 years later, they, along with their winemaker daughter Natalie Barnes, continue that mission. At Latah Creek, they never compromise their standards while continuing to produce remarkable wines. For more than three decades, it has been important to the family to keep their bottle prices low, and they have stayed true to their objective. “We could very easily raise our prices $5 to $15 per wine, but we choose not to,” Natalie says. “We choose to keep our wines inexpensively priced so that everyone can enjoy award-winning wines every day—not just on special occasions.” In addition to Latah Creek’s more than 15 wines varying from red to white, dry to sweet, light to full bodied and reserve reds, their gift shop is filled with gourmet foods and unique items hand selected by Ellena. From Nora Fleming Ceramic-ware that can be customized for any occasion or time of year and beautiful holiday décor to authentic Italian pastas and a variety of gluten-free foods and mixes, it’s the perfect place to shop for friends and family—and yourself! “We also have a cookbook featuring over 250 of my mom's recipes, each with a wine pairing suggestion,” says Natalie. “Each month, we select one wine to be our featured Wine of the Month, and we choose three recipes to pair with this wine, sharing the information to our customers via email.” Natalie attributes Latah Creek Wine Cellar’s long-standing success to her parents. “My mom is continually looking for unique items for the gift shop that would add to anyone's experience as well as new recipes, while my dad continues to strive to make great wine,” she says. “Together they started this winery, and together they have brought it here to our 37th harvest.” Natalie joined her father in winemaking in 2004, and today it is still just the two of them who handle the wines at Latah Creek. When it comes to what Natalie finds most rewarding about being in the winemaking business, she says, “I love to see a person's face light up when they try a wine and fall in love with it. I just want a person to find a wine that they love, not something I think they should love.” Over the course of the next few years, they are hoping to remodel and update their tasting room and parts of the winery to welcome their guests. And, as always, they will continue to make award-winning wines while looking for unique varietals to produce and get out to their loyal, wine-loving community. “I love being part of a longstanding family winery,” smiles Natalie. “I am deeply honored that I get to carry on my parents’ legacy and hope that one or both of my daughters would choose to continue in the legacy of making wines at Latah Creek.” Raise a glass to Mike, Ellena and Natalie and toast to another 36 years of award-winning winemaking. - A Dream and Passion Fulfilled
“I’m most proud of opening our doors,” says Sarah Baker. “It took so much to get here.” Growing up in Coeur d’Alene, Sarah got her first taste of the restaurant industry while in high school and quickly discovered her love for the service industry. In 2000, while in college, Sarah was hired as a busser at Europa, where she remained for eight years, working her way up to serving, bartending, managing and bookkeeping. She left Europa in 2008 to work at Cottage Café until 2015. “Between those two restaurants, I learned everything about the industry and what it takes to make it,” she says. After years of hard work and perseverance, it was time to fulfill her dream of opening her own restaurant. “You have to work insanely hard to get people to believe in you and your vision,” Sarah says. After renovating the old farmhouse in the serene setting of Stoddard Park, Sarah opened the doors to Chomper Café in April 2015. Once inside guests will experience an inviting atmosphere that is very unpretentious; a casual place that is comfortable and warm, with antique red chairs complemented by hand-painted murals and old local farm photos adorning the walls. On the menu you’ll find favorites like the Reuben, unbelievably delicious and loaded with corned beef, sauerkraut, house Russian dressing, Swiss cheese and thick marbled rye. The corned beef is slow braised for 10 hours, incredibly tender and full of flavor. Enjoy it in not only the Reuben but hash and Irish benny as well. They’ll soon be adding smoked pork hash to the menu! The chicken fried steak is their pride and joy, with its hand-pounded steak, breaded, fried and smothered in their house sausage gravy. At Chomper Café, they only utilize the best ingredients to pour into every item they serve, from the rice bran oil and 100-percent fresh butter to homemade strawberry jam and fresh potatoes sliced in house. And for guests with food intolerances, they are happy to accommodate those needs including providing gluten-free buns and breads. Open daily 7am to 3pm, Sarah and her team are ready to bring high-quality, delicious fare to the table paired with a memorable experience. Chomper Café Hayden 2345 W. - Calypsos Coffee and Creamery
With a passion for what they do and the amazing support of the community, Calypsos Coffee and Creamery on East Lakeside Avenue in Downtown Coeur d’Alene has been a favorite spot of both locals and tourists for a decade—they celebrated their 10-year anniversary this past November! Voted one of the top 10 Coolest Coffee Shops to visit in Idaho, along with No. 1 Coffee Shop by both the Inlander and Coeur d’Alene/Spokane Living magazine, if you are looking for one of the best cups of coffee around, Calypsos has it. The menu offerings include more than they’re carefully crafted coffee beverages. Incredible breakfasts and locally made pastries are served all day long, and Calypsos also dishes up freshly made soups, salad and sandwiches. Owned by Todd Jenicek, along with his wife Maria-Cristina, Calypsos is the only coffee shop in the Coeur d’Alene, Post Falls and Hayden Lake area that roasts their own coffee in house, which allows them to control their product. “We currently roast beans from 10 different countries, and we offer several single-origin and coffee blends for retail purchase,” says Todd. “We can also roast specifically for your business or event and private label.” Their signature espresso blend is made up of coffee from four different countries, and they rotate different countries and blends that they serve as their daily drip. “That’s so people can find out what might make their taste buds dance,” says Todd. Calypsos does not roast their coffee for as long as others typically do, with the end result a smooth product with a little more caffeine. The large family friendly space is like a living room, perfect to come relax and stay for a while. There’s even a small play area for the kids. And with an on-site meeting room and catering available, it is the perfect place to host meetings or events. They also offer a stage and sound system perfect for entertainment. On Monday evenings one can enjoy an open mic night, and there are several times throughout the year when various musicians perform. Part of Calypsos’ charm is their desire to give back to the community, as they are eager to support and promote local artists and nonprofits, even displaying some local artists’ creations for sale. And many nonprofits have hosted fundraisers at Calypsos. “We feel that is one of the best ways we can give back to the community,” says Todd. Todd and Maria-Cristina credit Calypsos’ 10 years of success to their incredible staff and patrons. As Todd says, “We just want our customers to know how much we really appreciate them. They have so many choices, and we are enthused that they continue to choose us!” Calypsos Coffee and Creamery Downtown Coeur d’Alene 116 E.
